Huge congratulations to our own Jan Havmoeller, who took the gun in race number five at the 2026 MC Nationals held at the Crystal Lake Yacht Club in Michigan! It was a fantastic display of tactical sailing by our fellow Catawba Yacht Club member. A total of 96 boats raced in the National Championship.
Jan put on a masterclass in patience during the fifth race. Starting from the middle of the pack in 46th position, he systematically worked his way through the fleet. He stayed with a lead group of five for the majority of the race, but secured the win with a brilliant strategic decision on the final downwind leg. While the rest of the fleet opted for the right gate, Jan took the left, securing the lead and holding on for the finish. A truly smart move by the Grand Master!
Race Conditions
The conditions on the water are excellent, with winds holding steady at about 10 knots. The race committee is aiming to complete three races today.
High-Tech Racing
An interesting detail from the course today is the use of a unique yellow mark. This isn't your standard buoy; it is a GPS-controlled mark with a motor inside that travels unassisted to any set coordinate.
